Milestone Monday

On Sunday, the club fielded teams in the NSW Women’s Premier Cricket competition for the first time.  Sydney University teams participated in the Women’s First Grade competition until the 1978-79 season, but those teams were fielded by a separate club constituted by what was then the Women’s Sports Union.  Until last season, the Universities Women’s Cricket Club (a joint venture between Sydney University and University of NSW) fielded teams, but that club has disbanded.  So it follows that every player who took the field on the weekend made her debut for SUCC in Women’s Premier Cricket.

It also follows that several players became the first to reach milestones for the club.  The first wicket in First Grade was claimed in the match against Manly by Aarati Bidari, helped by a stumping by Chaye Hartwell.  The first runs were scored by Frankie Nicklin, who went on to score the first fifty (a rapid 65 from only 33 balls) and share in the first fifty partnership (60 for the second wicket with Erica James).

Phoebe Litchfield hit her first T20I half-century last Monday: 52 not out for Australia against the West Indies at North Sydney.  Phoebe reached her fifty from only 18 balls, which is (by three balls) the fastest T20I fifty ever recorded for Australia, and equals the T20I record for any country (matching Sophie Devine’s performance for New Zealand against India in 2015).

Hayden Kerr’s 86 for NSW against Queensland in the Sheffield Shield match at Cricket Central was his third half-century in first-class cricket.

Nick Larkin’s 52 against Northern District on Saturday was his 55th innings of fifty or more in First Grade (21 centuries and 34 fifties).

Wilf La Fontaine-Jackson made his Second Grade debut for the club in the match against Northern District.

Charles Litchfield’s 50 against Northern District on Saturday was his 13th innings of fifty or more in Second Grade (including two centuries).  During his innings he passed 1500 runs in Seconds.

Jack Hill’s 68 not out against Northern District on Saturday was his 15th innings of fifty or more in Second Grade (including three centuries).

Ryan Danne’s 54 not out against Northern District on Saturday was his 14th innings of fifty or more in Second Grade (including four centuries).

Andrew Hazard played his 50th game for the club in all grades.

Jed Collins made his Second Grade debut for the club in the match against Northern District.

Tom Siede made his Third Grade debut for the club in the match against Northern District.  His 50 was his second half-century for the club (in only three matches), and he also collected his first wicket for the club.

Ravi Wikramanayake played his 100th Premier Cricket match (all grades, all clubs) on Saturday.  During his innings of 37 in Third Grade, he passed 2500 Premier Cricket runs in all grades.

Hayden McCarthy’s 3-31 against Northern District on Saturday was his best return with the ball in Third Grade.  His first wicket on Saturday was his 50th in Premier Cricket in all grades.

Milan Swaraj, with 63 against Northern District in Fourth Grade, scored his first half-century for the club.

Ben Edmondson made his Fourth Grade debut for the club and took his first wickets in that grade (2-34).

Avijay Maharaj (41) hit his highest Fifth Grade score for the club.

During his innings of 40 against Northern District in Fifth Grade on Saturday, Jazz Rinka passed 1000 runs for the club in all grades.

Murray Miles’s 72 not out against Georges River in Metropolitan Cup was his highest score (and second half-century) for the club.

Mitchell Spanner’s 45 against Georges River in Metropolitan Cup was his highest score for the club.

Daanyal Saeed’s 48 not out against Georges River in Metropolitan Cup was his highest score for the club.

The unbroken partnership of 87 between Daanyal Saeed and Murray Miles against Georges River was a new club record for the 9th wicket, both in Metropolitan Cup, and the other Sixth Grade competitions entered by the club over the years.

Milestone Monday

Hayden Kerr returned his best List A bowling figures (3-57) in the Marsh Cup match for NSW against Victoria in Melbourne.  During his T20 innings against Hawkesbury on Sunday, Hayden passed Will Hay (3307) to become the 14th-highest First Grade run-scorer for the club; then, with a six down the ground from the bowling of Patrick Moore, he reached 5000 runs for the club in all grades.  He’s the 27th player to reach that milestone.  His 50 was his 28th score of fifty or more in First grade (including three centuries).

In the T20 match against Gordon, for the second match in succession, Jack Attenborough took a wicket in his first over of the game, having first been hit for six.  It is not entirely clear whether this is some kind of plan.

Jack Hill’s 80 against University of NSW was his 14th score above fifty in Second Grade (including three centuries).

During his innings of 47 against University of NSW, Andrew Hazard passed 1000 runs in Second Grade (including 619 for Penrith).

Milestone Monday returns for 2023-24

Jack Attenborough made his debut for the club in the T20 match against Sydney.  In the second match of the double-header, against North Sydney, he took his first wickets for the club (2-14).  Jack played 79 First Grade matches for University of NSW without taking a wicket, and last took a Premier Cricket wicket in Poidevin-Gray back in 2020-21.

While Jordan Gauci was steering University to a win over North Sydney in Saturday’s T20 game, he passed 1000 runs for the club, all in First Grade.  He has now scored over 1000 First Grade runs for three clubs: University (1003), Blacktown (2201) and Hawkesbury (1175).

Milestone Monday (on a Sunday)

Sydney University’s semi-final win over Manly on the weekend took the club into the First Grade grand final for the eleventh time since finals were introduced to the competition in 1952-53.  This means that the club will contest the grand final of all three First Grade competitions (Belvidere Cup, 50 overs and T20), matching the feat of the 2018-19 team.

Sydney University dismissed the first four Manly batsmen without scoring in the First Grade semi-final on Saturday.   This was the first time this has occurred in a Belvidere Cup finals match involving the club (the most recent similar event was in 2013-14, when Bankstown’s first two batsmen were dismissed for 0 in the second innings of the grand final).  Manly’s total of 78 was the lowest score against University in a Belvidere Cup finals match since that 2013-14 season, when Randwick-Petersham managed only 77 in the semi-final.  Curiously, however, this was not the first time in any grade that Manly has lost 4-1 in a semi-final against Sydney University, with the only run being a leg bye.  Exactly the same scoreline appeared in the Fourth Grade semi-final in 1980-81.  On that occasion, Manly was chasing a target of 152, and began by losing 4-1.  Shortly afterwards, four wickets fell with the score on 6, so that Manly was 8 for 6 (they recovered to reach 21).  But that was in the days of uncovered pitches.

Hayden Kerr’s phenomenal spell of 5-30 (including 3-0 from his first five overs) was his first five-wicket haul for the club in any grade.  He followed up by scoring 51, his 27th score of fifty or more in First Grade (including four hundreds).

When Tim Cummins caught Manly’s Matt Brewster on Saturday, he completed his 250th dismissal for the club in First Grade (215 caught and 35 stumped).  He becomes the third player to reach that landmark for the club, after the late Alan Crompton (331) and Shane Stanton (283).

Devlin Malone extended his career-best season tally of First Grade wickets to 68 by dismissing Steve O’Keefe.

Caelan Maladay, with 3-31 against Manly, passed 40 wickets for the season for the first time in his First Grade career.  He also reached 50 wickets for the season for the club (42 in Firsts, 8 in Poidevin-Gray).

When Kieran Tate dismissed Manly’s Jay Lenton on Saturday, he reached 40 First Grade wickets for the season for the first time in his career.

Damien Mortimer, with 76 not out against Manly, hit his 42nd score above fifty in First Grade (including eight centuries).  It was his 150th innings for the club, and during it he passed 700 runs for the season (for the fifth time in his First Grade career).

During Ryan McElduff’s 34 not out against Manly, he passed 500 First Grade runs for the season for the third time in his career.

And, finally, a milestone marking an event that didn’t happen.  When the semi-finals commenced on Saturday, it was the first time that a Premier Cricket semi-final round had been played without Ash Cowan taking part since 2011-12 -  a gap of 4382 days.

Milestone Monday

Sydney University has progressed to the First-Grade semi-final for the 13th time since finals were introduced to the competition in 1952-53.

Devlin Malone’s three wickets against Randwick-Petersham on the weekend gave him 67 for the season in First Grade, beating his own previous best of 65 (in 2018-19).  Only Peter James (71 in 1973-74) and Jack Massie (69 in 1913-14) have taken more wickets in a First Grade season for University.

The qualifying final against Randwick-Petersham was Hayden Kerr’s 100th First Grade match.

Jordan Gauci, playing his 159th First Grade match, appeared in a Belvidere Cup finals match for the first time.  He also passed 600 runs for the season.

The qualifying final against Randwick-Petersham was Nick Larkin’s 57th finals appearance for the club (18 in Belvidere Cup, 15 in the First grade Limited Overs competition, 13 in the T20 competition, 6 in Poidevin-Gray and 5 in Seconds).

Milestone Monday

The extraordinary win over Manly on Saturday earned Sydney University the First Grade minor premiership for only the fourth time in the club’s history.   The club will now contest the First Grade finals for the 16th time since finals were introduced to the competition in 1952-53.

Damien Mortimer’s outstanding 91 against Manly on Saturday was his 41st innings above fifty in First Grade (including 8 centuries).  During his innings, he passed 600 runs for the season (for the sixth time in his First Grade career), and he was appearing in his 300th Premier Cricket match in all grades (151 for University, 109 for Campbelltown, 21 for Bankstown and 19 for Wests).

Jordan Gauci’s 58 against Manly on Saturday was his 35th score of fifty or more in First Grade (including seven centuries).

Oli Zannino made his 100th appearance in Premier Cricket matches (including 55 for Gordon).

Against Manly on Saturday, Devlin Malone made both his 150th First Grade appearance and his 150th appearance for the club in all grades.  He took his tally of wickets for the season to 64: there have only been four more successful seasons for a First Grade bowler in the club’s history.  Peter James took 71 wickets in 1973-74; Jack Massie took 69 in 1913-14; Andrew Staunton took 65 in 2002-03; and Malone himself took 65 in 2018-19.

Kieran Tate had played 25 First Grade innings before Saturday, but on no previous occasion had he hit the first delivery he faced for six.

Charlie Dummer’s furious 67 against Manly in Seconds was his 29th innings of fifty or more in Premier Cricket (including three centuries).  During his innings he passed 2000 runs for the club in all grades.

Charles Litchfield, with 53 against Manly in Seconds, passed fifty for the club for the 24th time (including seven centuries).

When Prakhar Sharma dismissed Manly’s Jacob O’Sullivan in Seconds on Saturday, he captured his 50th wicket for the club in all grades.

Henry Snyman’s 57 against Manly on Saturday was his first half-century in Third Grade.

The game against Manly was Jazz Rinka’s 100th match for the club in all grades.  And it was Liam Coelho’s 50th match in Fourth Grade.

When Ash Cowan was adjudged lbw against Manly on Saturday, it was the 300th time he had been dismissed while playing for the club.

Ben Crawford hit 92 in the Metropolitan Cup qualifying final against Randwick-Petersham, which was the third time he’s passed fifty for the club (and the first time he’d failed to convert a half-century into a century).

Milestone Monday

Yet more milestones for Nick Larkin.  During his innings against Easts on Saturday, he passed Greg Mail (10,274) to become the leading run-scorer in the club’s history, with 10,284 in all grades. In the process, he also passed 8,000 runs in First Grade.  His 66 was his 54th innings above fifty in Firsts (including 21 centuries).   Only Mail and Ian Moran (8695) have previously scored 8,000 runs in Firsts for University.  Nick has become the 73rd player in the history of the competition to reach 8,000 First Grade runs. We don’t have a precise count on the number of players who have scored more than 10,000 runs for a single club, but it seems to be just over twenty.

During his match-winning innings against Easts on Saturday, Damien Mortimer reached 6000 runs in First Grade (1355 of them for Campbelltown).  His 89 not out also took hm past 500 runs for the season, and was his 40th innings above fifty in First Grade (including 8 centuries).

During his innings of 41 against Easts in First Grade on Saturday, Don Butchart passed 500 runs for the season, and for the club.

During his unbeaten, and rather important, 32 against Easts on Saturday, Devlin Malone passed 500 runs in First Grade, which only took him 149 matches.

Flinders Zhang-Langley picked up his best bowling figures in Fourths, 3-7 against Easts.

Mitchell Cotton, with 5-36 against Easts in Fifth Grade, claimed his first five-wicket haul for the club.

Pranav Kalia’s 41 not out against Easts was his highest score in Fifth Grade.

Milestone Monday

Nick Larkin’s outstanding 106 against Northern District in the grand final of the Limited Overs competition was his 21st First Grade century.

Devlin Malone’s first wicket against Easts on Saturday gave him 60 for the season, the second time in his career that he has reached that milestone.  He now has 62 wickets for the season – only six bowlers (including himself) have taken more in a First Grade season for University.   As well as which, in midweek, he took 4-54 for the NSW 2nd XI against the Queensland 2nd XI, his career-best figures in the Toyota 2nd XI competition.

The Limited Overs final against Northern District on Sunday was Damien Mortimer’s 150th game for the club, all in First Grade.  On Saturday, he set a new (and bizarre) record for the club, when a run was scored from his bowling – he had played 149 matches for the club without conceding a run (his one previous over, sent down in 2020-21, was a maiden).

Ravi Wikramanayake’s 108 against Easts on Saturday was his second century in Premier Cricket, both of them scored in Second Grade for Sydney University.  During his innings he passed 1500 runs in Seconds.

Against Sydney on Saturday, Damien Mortimer played his 200th innings in First Grade.  Damien has passed Ian Fisher to become the sixth-highest run scorer in First Grade in the club’s history.

Oli Zannino finally has a First Grade batting average.  Against Sydney, he was dismissed for the first time in Firsts (in his fourth game), so he now has a batting average of 92 in the top grade.

Devlin Malone’s four wickets against Sydney on Sunday took his tally for the season to 59.  That mark has previously been achieved by Tim Ley (twice), John Grimble and Stewart Smith.  Only eight time has a University bowler taken more wickets in the course of a First Grade season.

The match against Sydney was Kieran Tate’s 200th match for the club in all grades.

Hayden Storey, with 65 against Sydney in Seconds, hit his 16th score above fifty for the club (including four centuries).  He also held his 50th catch for the club.
