SUCC at The Colour Run Sydney!!!

Sydney University Cricket Club are looking to enter a team into The Colour Run in Sydney on Sunday 24th August and we are seeking individuals to participate and raise some money for some important causes.

The Colour Run has become one of the most popular, fun and vibrant runs in the world, and we are excited about joining the fun and colourful run & party!

The Colour Run is held in Centennial Park on Sunday 24th August starting 9am. This is barely a month out from our first round matches, and an excellent opportunity to invigorate the social atmosphere of our Club.

The Club will nominate a team of 25 participants to start with, cover the registration fee, and provide participants with a coupon code to enter our team. If more than 25 wish to participate, we will arrange for more places (unless the event is sold out)

In return though, we ask that you pledge a minimum fundraising effort of $75, with a personal target for all participants of $200. All profits will be split between SUCC and The LBW Trust's Batting For Change campaign of which our own Ryan Carters is a strong advocate.

We will set up an online fundraising page for you to promote to your family, friends and colleagues, so all you have to do is 'promote, promote, promote'!

With the season already fast approaching, less than 9 weeks away from our first match, please be aware of some of the upcoming important dates for pre-season and early season:

• Pre-season Indoor Training at SCG Nets from 8pm to 9:30pm commencing on Tuesday 12th August 2014 (6 week program)
• Green Shield Trials at SCG Nets from 5:30pm to 7:00pm on Sunday 3rd and 10th August 2014
• Trial matches on 13th & 20th September 2014 (TBC)
• Round One of SCA Competition on 27th September 2014
• SUCC 150th Anniversary Dinner at SCG on Saturday 18th October 2014
• SCA T20 Competition on Sunday 12th and 19th October 2014 with a joint SUCC/Sydney Thunder Fan Activation Day to be held at Sydney Uni on 19th October

SUCC Stars Still Shining

Despite it being the off-season for Sydney University Cricket Club, many of our players are still showing the way on-the-field across the world.

SUCC and Blues star Sean Abbott is currently participating in a Quadrangular series in Darwin between Australia A, South Africa A, India A and the Australian National Performance Squad.

Abbott has been a strong performer for the NPS claiming four wickets for 36 runs from his 10 overs in their opening clash against South Africa A to restrict them to 212 from their 50-overs. Abbott’s four wickets included three bowled. Unfortunately, Abbott was unable to trouble the scorers in the run-chase as NPS fell 10 runs short of a first-up victory.

A stellar performance from Abbott in NPS’ clash with their much fancied Australia A rivals saw the upset of the tournament with a 52-run victory to NPS. Abbott put together an impressive cameo late in the innings to smash 33 runs from 22 balls to push the total to a competitive 252 runs from their 50 overs.

Australia A were never really in the hunt in reply, losing regular wickets throughout their innings to be rolled for 200 runs. Abbott again was the standout with the ball claiming three for 22 runs from 7.2 overs including the dangerous scalps of Tom Cooper, Peter Nevill and Ben Cutting.

Abbott was rested in the big clash against India A, and his absence was felt in a heavy defeat with India A chasing down NPS’ 217 runs inside 40 overs with 6 wickets in hand.

In NPS’ most recent match, Australia A exacted revenge for their earlier defeat with a comfortable 7 wicket win. NPS posting 214 runs with a brilliant century from Tom Cooper guiding Australia A to the win. Despite missing out with the bat, Abbott again showed his value with the ball, claiming two for 27 runs at 3 rpo whilst four of his fellow bowlers all went at over 5.8 rpo.

Abbott’s NPS side currently sits 3rd with matches remaining against South Africa A on 29th July and India A on 31st July.

On the opposite side of the globe, SUCC’s run-scoring machine, Nick Larkin found himself representing Ireland in a 3-match one-day series against Sri Lanka A with a chance to impress selectors and coaching staff ahead of Ireland’s upcoming involvement in the ICC Cricket World Cup in Feb/Mar 2015.

Larkin had belted a match winning 82 runs for his North Down side in the NCU Premier League earlier this month before joining the Ireland A side for a warm-up match against an MCC side.

An easy 10-wicket win for Ireland A over an MCC side meant Larkin didn’t get an opportunity to show his talent in a warm-up match.

Unfortunately, Larkin’s first hit for Ireland against Sri Lanka A didn’t trouble the scorers and a promising start in the 2nd match with 16 off 17 balls was cut short in Ireland’s unsuccessful run chase of Sri Lanka A’s 329 runs.

Larkin will head back to North Down looking to dominate again to lift the side from their current 3rd position and to ensure another opportunity for Ireland when they take on Scotland in a one-day series in September.

Sydney University Cricket Club held its 150th Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 23rd July 2014.

Incumbent Chairman, James Rodgers, produced a passionate address to the Club touching on the proud history of the Club's 150 years and the overwhelming success of the 2013/14 season as he presented the Annual Report (which will be available online shortly).

SUCC Celebrate Season 2013/14 In Style

The SCA Annual Premiers Awards Dinner was held Friday 9th May and whilst Sydney University Cricket Club didn't have the highest representation at the event, those attending certainly were the most passionate.

It was a night for celebrations as Captains Greg Mail and Tom Kierath proudly accepted The Belvidere Cup and The Albert Cup respectively.

Club stalwart, Mail, added a further Captain of The Year award to his personal trophy cabinet, after leading the SUCC First Grade team to their 3rd premiership in 4 years.

Continuing the personal accolades, fellow first grade players Scott Henry, Nick Larkin, Nigel Cowell and Tim Ley were all rewarded for their successful season with selection in the SCA Merit Team of The Year for 2013/14.

As a shock to the man himself (but not to all who have been a part of SUCC's recent success), Director of Cricket, Gary Whitaker, received the Bob Simpson Award as SCA Coach of The Year for the 2nd time in his SUCC tenure.

Most importantly for the Club, SUCC was awarded the Spirit of Cricket Award, as well as the coveted Club Championship. The latter was proudly accepted by Club Chairman, James Rodgers.

The transcript of James' moving acceptance speech is as follows:

“It is a great honour to accept the Club Championship on behalf of the Sydney University Cricket Club.

To win this trophy means a great deal to us, especially in our 150th season.

This is a trophy that everyone in the club can share in; from the youngest to the oldest, on and off the field. From the experienced players and leaders like Greg Mail and Tom Kierath (who has now played in an extraordinary seven Premierships with the Club). To the young players just beginning their journey in Grade cricket such as 17 year old Jonte Pattison, who has now played in two Premierships in his two years with the Club, and 18 year old Joe Kershaw who won the man of the match award in the 2nd Grade Final after only eight games of Grade cricket.

May I thank the SCA, all the administrators and sponsors, all the umpires and officials, all who organized this season. I acknowledge every other club that played in this season’s competitions, especially those who have won trophies here tonight.

120 years ago, Grade cricket started and I’m proud to say that Sydney University was there when the first ball was bowled, just as proudly as we have been a Club since 1864.

One last acknowledgement:

As many of you know, our Chairman, 1st Grade record holder, Life Member of our Club, Life Member of this Association, Mick O’Sullivan, died just before this season started. All through 2013-14, our players never waivered from our aim…to win the Club Championship for Micko whose initials-MOS-were on all our playing shirts this season. I know that Micko has been watching over us all through every game in every Grade, urging us on, willing us to success.

So, now I accept this Club Championship on behalf of everyone at Sydney University and in memory of one of our greatest, Mick O’Sullivan."
